Basel: Rhein-Verlag, 1927, original half morocco over patterned paper boards.Rhein-Verlag, Basel, 1927. The first edition in German, limited to 1,100 copies, of which the first 100 were signed by Joyce. This is number 1 of the 100 signed copies. The German edition was the first translation of Ulysses to be published. Rhein-Verlag held a competition to find a translator, finally selecting Georg Goyert, who subsequently worked with Joyce on the translation in Ostend during the summer of 1926. Joyce was pleased with the edition and the publication was a success, selling out in three weeks. Issued in three volumes, each octavo in quarter brown morocco over marbled boards; raised bands at spine with green calf gilt lettering labels; red cloth page markers; top edges gilt, some gatherings still uncut. Edges a little rubbed, corners bumped, upper hinge of Vol. I partially split, but an excellent set overall, and extremely rare with Joyce’s signature.
