James IV (1488-1513) gold Half Unicorn,S-5322, XF45 NGC
James IV (1488-1513) gold Half Unicorn, S-5322, XF45 NGC, a fascinating and delightful example with the beast well outlined, holding the Scottish crest and his rear hoof standing upon an annulet; multiply struck but nonetheless clear and well detailed, excellent rims and surfaces, old gold toning. Reading the legends alone is a pleasure for the historically minded: on the obverse the country name abbreviated as SCO with the O being a closed 8, the stops on both sides shattered. One can imagine a semi-literate die-cutter trying his best to make this coin. The color of the gold and the preservation state make this extremely desirable. Very historic and rare. King James was still a young man when, in 1513 at the head of a sizable army, he invaded the north of England and was slaughtered on the battlefield at Flodden. Now there was a true king!

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
