James II Half-Guinea, 1688. S-3404. The B in IACOBVS
James II Half-Guinea, 1688. S-3404. The "B" in IACOBVS appears to be a recut "R." Laureate bust, the only style of portrait used. Reverse styled upon the design of the preceding coinage--that of his older brother (Charles II), but lacking the central interlocked C's. Final year of this 3-year reign, and historically interesting as the Glorious Revolution (in which Parliament declared James II no longer king) commenced in November of this year. Catalogues in the Spink guide for $4,150 (about $8,300) in EF grade, with no value given for a higher grade, reflecting its rarity. As a variety, its value is unknown (however the only listed variety of this type is called "extremely rare" and remains unpriced by Spink). MS63 NGC. Formerly PCGS-graded MS63 and a Terner Registry coin (Terner I sale, Goldbergs, May 2003, Lot 130). Both major grading services agree, then. Choice Brilliant Uncirculated, somewhat softly struck in the centers as is typical of these issues, with a streak of tin-flecks (impurities in the gold alloy) horizontally across the king's cheek. Bright satiny luster, lovely clean surfaces, and original old-time gold toning are all hallmarks of Terner coins, present on this specimen. Among the finest known examples of this issue. Unlisted, possibly a new variety in top condition. Very rare even as a type coin!

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
