James Hoban Document Signed "James Hoban." Partial handwritten document, measuring 8" x 4". The document is of a legal nature and is signed by two other men in addition to Hoban. Accompanying the document are three smaller items relating to Hoban. One is a photograph of a piece of artwork depicting Hoban, another is a stamp featuring Hoban and his masterpiece, the White House, and there is a small newspaper clipping about Hoban. It reads, "On the morning of March 14th, 1792, citizens across the country opened their broadsides and gazettes to a unique advertisement." Penned by Secretary of State Thomas Jefferson, it announced a competition for the design of George Washington's presidential residence. "Commissioners of Federal Buildings in Washington, in the Territory of Columbia," would award $500 or a medal of that value to the person who "shall produce to them the most approved plan…for a President's House to be created in this City." The entry by Washington's favorite, Irish carpenter-builder James Hoban, won hands down. Hoban took the medal. Hoban is responsible for one of America's greatest symbols, and yet his name is nearly forgotten. Commemorate the architect of the White House by bidding on this lot!

The partial document is in fine condition; the document has begun to yellow from age and acid degradation; localized foxing on the edges; usual folds are present; small tears along folds; signatures and handwriting are dark and crisp!
