(James Garfield) WILLIAM T SHERMAN (1820-91), Union General; started from Chattanooga on his famous "March to the Sea." ALS, "W T Sherman", 3pp, Feb 27, 1882, 8vo, Hdqtrs Army of the U.S. letterhead, to General Judson D Bingham (1831-1909) at Fort Leavenworth, interesting reference to the Congressional memorial service for President James Garfield, where James G Blaine made a famous address. In part, "...We are all getting ready to go up to the Capitol to attend the Garfield Obsequies. [Philip] Sheridan, [Winfield Scott] Hancock & [Oliver O] Howard will be with me...as 'Priviledged Members' - a few only...can be admitted...The day is fine and the crowd will be...Tell Miss Alice Blaine that all are well at her house, and that we expect a rattling Oration for her Father..." Garfield, a former Union Mjor General, had become President in March, 1881. He was shot by Charles Guiteau and died in September of that year. VG. $1,000-1,500
