<B>James Garfield Letter Signed</B></I> "<I>J.A. Garfield.</B></I>" Two pages, 7.75" x 9.75", Washington, D.C., March 7, 1876. This letter was written while Garfield was a congressman for the state of Ohio; he writes the letter to George W. Steele. The content discusses the inauguration of Rutherford B. Hayes; it reads in part: "<I>…I have just reached home from the inauguration of Hayes. The city is full of people and the applicants for office are more numerous than I have seen them for years…They all say that Fogg is a strong candidate and a good man, but Cleveland should have both positions, that and the U.S. District Attorneyship...</B></I>"<BR><BR>The letter is in very fine condition; lower left corner is torn off; tape, used to repair a tear, present on the lower right corner. The letter is accompanied by a photogravure of Garfield.
