Politician nicknamed the “Plumed Knight,” he became secretary of state in 1889. ALS signed “J. G. Blaine,” four pages on two adjoining sheets, 5 x 8, May 20, 1869. Letter to George Ewing. In part: “It has been especially grateful to my feelings to find myself remembered so kindly by those who knew me in my youth…I have the warmest attachment to Washington [College] and all of its surroundings. To the good old College I owe a debt of gratitude which I can never repay. If I have attained any success in life it is owed to the good education I was enabled to receive within the walls of the venerable institution, and to the good principles which were implanted in my mind by the virtuous & excellent people with whom it was my good fortune to be reared and respected.” In fine condition, with some scattered light toning and soiling.
