Politician (1830–1893) nicknamed the 'Plumed Knight,' who served as a US senator, speaker of the house, and secretary of state to three Presidents (Harrison, Garfield, and Arthur). He was also the 1884 Republican nominee for president, backed by notorious financier Jay Gould, but lost the election to Grover Cleveland. ALS signed “J. G. Blaine,” four pages on two adjoining sheets, 5 x 8, September 20, 1880. Letter to F. O. French, president of the Richmond & Alleghany Railroad. In part: "New subscribers to bonds will receive 50 per cent in stock—Original stock holders subscribing for Bonds get 200 per cent of stock—and first come first served. All original subscribers who may not be ready with the funds will see all this interest promptly transferred to the associate who happens to possess the nimble sixpence or a friend who does. It is a crowding-out, freezing-out process in its effect—however it may have been designed. I hasten to say that had I been present as director I never should have consented to it and that ineffective as my voice may be I solemnly protest against it. I believe it will create discontent and not stand the test." In fine condition, with some old adhesive residue along the hinge.
