JAMES FREEMAN CLARKE (1810-1888) American preacher and author. Autograph Letter Signed, “James F. Clark.” Three pages, 8” x 10”. Boston. April 28, 1843. Freeman writes to “Rev Dr. Sprague,” in part: “ … I send you herewith a piece of one of Mr. Lindsay’s letters, one of Belham, & one of my grandfather Hull. To these I have added one of President Holley’s one or Mr. Harlitt’s (father of Wm. Hartlitt) an English Unitarian preacher- one of Com. Isaac Hull’s, the hero of the Constitution and one ffrom Mr. Bentley of Salem & Gov. Jas. Sullivan of Boston. I do not know whether any of these will be valuable to you- if not, you can easily return them. I can also furnish you, if you have them not, with letters from Major Generals H. Knox and Benj. Lincoln, from Aaron Burr, Governor Geo. Clinton, Col. Brooks (afterward Gov. of Massachusetts) and Timothy Pickering. These were mostly written during the Revolutionary War- I have, besides these, duplicates of letter from Gallatin, Gen. Dearborn, and Sam. Dexter, and speeches to the Indians with Thos. Jefferson’s signature. Any, or all of them, are at your service. I have a very small collection of my own that I got together almost by accident. As you are so kind as to offer to send me some of your spare autographs I will tell you what I have, which is easier than to say what I have not. I have letters, mostly holograph by Sr. Channing, Bsp. Seabury ( of Prot. Espisc. Church) Bsp Cheevers (Roman Catholic) Holley, Priestly, Lindays, Belshaw, Presidents John Adams, Madison, Monroe, Jefferson, Fisher Ames, Sam. Dexter, Governors Sullivan & G. Gore, Thos Pinkney, Geo. Clinton, Gov. Dudley or Mass 1706- Gov. Shirley 1760 - John Hancock, Bowdoin, Sam Adams, Henry Clay, General Lincoln, Knox, Heath, Geo. Clinton, W.H. Harrison, & Gen Anthony Wayne - I have besides these autographs of John Vaughan of Phila. Miss Motrineau, R.W. Emerson, Alfred Tennyson, John Keats, Rammohun Roy, Daniel Boone, Prof Ebeling of Hamburg, Hannah Adams, Dr. Bowditch, Land Lyndhurts, John J. Astor, Jude Story, - You see there is a singular mixture … ” Truly a laundry list of wonderful autographs in this letter. Deserving of special attention is undoubtedly the Jefferson signed “Speeches to the Indians,” as well as the fine offering a letter penned during the Revolutionary War and the especially rare signature of Daniel Boone. A fine glimpse into the collecting habits of Clarke, who has himself become a desirable addition to the collections of today’s autograph enthusiasts. Usual folds. Extremely Fine.
