James Fisk Jr. "The Barnum of Wall Street" Document Signed One page, 5" x 7", ornate J F Jr letterhead, New York, August 7, 1871. A printed invitation to a ball at which the Ninth Regiment Band was to make their debut as a larger 200-member unit. Fisk has boldly signed it at the bottom. One of the "Robber Barons" of the 19th century, Fisk joined Daniel Drew and Jay Gould against Cornelius Vanderbilt in the "Erie War" in issuing fraudulent stock in the Erie Railroad Co. Their attempts to control the gold market led to the Panic of 1869. Fisk also financed theatrical shows and dated showgirls, a practice that led to his early demise. An argument over money and Broadway showgirl Josie Mansfield caused business associates Edward Stokes to shoot and kill him on January 6, 1872, just months after this document was signed. Fine condition with two mounting traces on verso, one causing a very minor paper loss at the top left corner, the original recipient's name has been erased. Seldom offered. Originally purchased from Charles Hamilton. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.
