Handwritten manuscript fragment by James Fenimore Cooper, one page, 7.75 x 1.75, headed "On Language." In full: "Language, the fit attendant of reason, distinguishes man from all the other creatures of the earth. The faculty of speech is one of the highest gifts of nature, and it is important in proportion as learning, all truths, and the charities of life are of interest to human happiness." Includes a letter from Mrs. R. Cooper, dated December 10, 1879, transmitting "a few lines of M.S. in Mr. Cooper's hand writing—a passage from a lecture on language delivered in this village nearly fifty years since." In very good to fine condition, with two tears to the fragment.
