Controversial figure (1928–1998) convicted and jailed for the 1968 assassination of Martin Luther King. Six letters, all signed “James E. Ray,” consisting of two TLSs, a one-page ALS, and three short ALSs, all written inside of greeting cards, with all letters dating from the 1980s. One letter reads, in part: “I received [a letter] from an attorney helping me asking that I give him the names of anyone I know who would support a trial in the MLK case (there has never been a trial, just a guilty plea entered by the attorney who was supposed to be representing me).” At the end of the one-page ALS, Ray writes, “There has been a lot of news here lately about the pope [sic], concerning the attempt on his life a couple years ago, I suspect that if the incident would have happened in the U.S. all the details would have been hushed up or classified.” In fine condition. Accompanied by four of the original mailing envelopes.
