This incredibly fresh watercolour was probably painted near Montreal where Duncan established himself in about 1830. As a draftsman and professional painter Duncan was adept, and so recognized he held teaching positions at the McGill Normal School and MacKay Institute, Montreal amongst others. Duncan was a significant element in mid 19th century Canadian art where he acted as a founding member of the Montreal Society of artists and went on to collaborate with Cornelius Krieghoff in painting "Panorama of Canada".
