James Cawthorn - Sketch Original Art (undated). James Cawthorn, like his spiritual mentor, Burne Hogarth, is that rare thing: a unique and original mind working in a medium of heroic fantasy. Cawthorn's talent and involvement in the early beginnings of this field in Britain have made him something of a pioneer. In the world of comics, Cawthorn was again ahead of the pack. His adaptation of Michael Moorcock's "The Jewel in the Skull" in 1978 was the UK's first homegrown graphic novel. Cawthorn's work, acknowledging predecessors such as Gustave Doré, gives physicality to the unreal and makes the imaginary seem possible. Presented here is a 10" x 14" sketch, filled with an accumulation of doodles and full-fledged sketches, complete with a solid rendering of a Granbretan noble, bedecked in glittering armor. From the collection of Richard and Wendy Pini. Richard say: "Wendy was very much into the "Stormbringer" tales by Michael Moorcock when she was in her 20s, and we searched for anything relating to the characters. We discovered the illustrations of both Phillip Druillet and James Cawthorn in our convention travels, and were thrilled to find this page of original sketches by Cawthorn."
