ALS signed “Jim C.,” one page both sides, 7.25 x 10.5, April 6, 1970. Cagney writes, in part: “Enjoyed the letter from Mrs. McGuire. She writes with an Irish rythm [sic]. Had an interesting experience the other day. An Irish magazine was sent to me in 1959 which I didn’t see till last week. It had been tucked away here in my absence. They do that around here. They’re neat! In it is a piece by a Margaret Holland. Good writer and no nonsense. It struck me that she writes as Eric Severeid [sic] reads his comments on the news. Same beat. Then I found his ‘Not So Wild a Dream’ (1946)…his writing doesn’t have the cadence of Mrs. H. Curious! His broadcasts are done in simple declarative sentences which he wrote personally (I’m told). Thinking it over it occurs to me that were he to employ such a style in a book it could become too mannered. I often wonder about the Severid [sic] name. He’s a Norske. Spring is springing and I’m making plans to have out of here any way before May.” In fine condition, with a horizontal fold passing through the signature, and a few pencil notations.
