Partly-printed DS as president, one page, 7 x 9, April 22, 1857. President Buchanan orders the Secretary of State “to affix the Seal of the United States to the envelope of a letter addressed to His Majesty the Emperor of China (William B. Reed’s letter of credence).” Signed at the conclusion by Buchanan. Cloth matted and framed to an overall size of 12.75 x 14.75. Scattered creases, a couple lightly affecting signature, as well as some scattered light toning, otherwise fine condition. An important document as the letter notified the Emperor of China of Reed’s appointment as ambassador. At this time, the Second Opium War was being fought by China and Britain and France. Reed would be stepping into a very volatile situation, which would eventually draw the US Navy into the conflict.
