Rare bank check, 8 x 3, filled out in another hand and signed by Buchanan as president, payable to Riggs & Co for $150.00, January 2, 1861. Written on the pay line in another hand is “Interest on this stock standing in my own name.” Archivally matted and framed, with a portrait of Buchanan to an overall size of 14.25 x 20. In fine condition, with a uniform shade of mild toning, light show-through from endorsement on reverse, and a small brush to bottom notation. Checks signed by Buchanan are seldom found, with this example noteworthy in that it dates toward the closing days of his self-imposed single term in office and as national events continued to build toward the Civil War. This is one of the few Buchanan checks signed during his presidency offered in 30 years.
