Full hand-addressed free frank, 13 x 8.25, with franked panel measuring 7 x 3.25, addressed in Buchanan’s hand to, “William Welch Esq, Johnstown, Cambria County, Penna," and franked in the upper right corner, “Free James Buchanan.” Most likely written before 1840, as Buchanan had franking privileges as a US Representative between 1821-1831, and as US Senator from 1834-1845. In very good condition, with several light vertical folds to panel, and some light staining to lower portion of address panel, not affecting any writing, as well as top edge of top panel, paper loss to top edge from seal, and some mild soiling to panel.
