Partly-printed DS as president, one page, 16 x 10, February 25, 1861. President Buchanan appoints William Goodrich as "First Lieutenant in the Comp'y of ('D') Union Volunteers of the Militia of the District of Columbia." Signed nicely at the conclusion by Buchanan, and countersigned by Secretary of War Joseph Holt. Lower left corner blindstamped with the War Office seal. In fine condition, with light edge staining, and a slightly trimmed bottom edge. Accompanied by a handsome engraved portrait. Buchanan's tenure as American president lasted for only five more days.
