Full free frank, measuring 9.75 x 8 unfolded, with franked panel measuring 5 x 3, addressed by Buchanan to “Ovid F. Johnston Esquire, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania,” and franked in the upper right, “Free, James Buchanan.” Panel also bears a May 2, City of Washington postmark, and docketed on an edge panel in an unknown hand, “J. Buchanan, May 2, 1856.” Repaired vertical tear to address panel, affecting a single name of signature and a few letters of address, separations along folds, scattered toning and soiling, and paper loss to top edge, otherwise very good condition.
