ALS, one page, 5 x 8, March 30, 1850. Buchanan writes his friend, William S. Amweg. In full: “The bearer hereof John McGowan served in the last war with Great Britain & alleges that he was disabled by a fall from a horse whilst in the line of his duty. If so, he is entitled to a pension. Will you please to attend to the case for him.” The reverse of the adjacent page is addressed by Buchanan and signed “from Mr. Buchanan.” In very good condition, with scattered creasing (heavier at the top), edge chipping and scattered faint soiling. A personal plea from the former secretary of state who eight years later would become the nation’s 15th president.
