<B>James Buchanan Treaty Signed as President.</B></I> 12 pages, 10" x 13.5", Lima, July 4th, 1857. A treaty of the United States permitting duty free commerce for the whaling ships of the United States in the country of Peru. Said ships were allowed to trade their goods only for the purpose of refitting, gathering supplies and provisions, and making ready for long and continued voyages. This treaty has contemporary translation in Spanish on the reverse of each page. The top left corner of the treaty is missing but no significant loss of text occurred. Liberated from a larger bound work (presumably Peruvian) the edges are gold foiled and the binding left edges are rough from the stitching. This is an important perspective on international affairs as it relates to whaling and restrictive commerce in the mid 1800s. In 1841 the United States made claims against Peru as they seized American ships in neutral waters, especially whalers. By 1850 relations with Peru improved and were considered a friendly port. Very good condition with noted flaw.
