James Buchanan (1791-1868), President, Letter Signed "James Buchanan" as United States Minister to Great Britain, two pages, 7.75" x 12.5", London, November 12, 1855 to General R. B. Campbell, United States Consul in London, and concerning a damaged American ship. He writes in part: "I regret that in either of these cases an application had been made and refused at the Privy Council before it was possible for me to present the subject at the Foreign Office. If, however, by the action of the British Government and without any fault of theirs, American ships are subjected to detention and damage, their owners will probably take measures through the State Department at Washington, to obtain a fair indemnity for their losses..." Usual folds, very light soiling, else fine condition. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.
