ALS, one page both sides, 4.75 x 7, November 11, 1846. Letter to the "Hon: W. Pendleton," in part: "I have just had an interview with W. Carvallo; in which I informed him courteously & kindly that it would be in vain to renew the discussion on the question of prescription: & intimated that the President, the discussion having been exhausted, intended to submit the whole case to Congress. I have not time to write you all that passed. He said, however, that he intended to present to me a statement with a number of documents in support of it, which would clearly prove the injustice of the claim: & convince me that the money seized was Spanish property. I need not state my answer to such an improbable declaration. I told him it would afford me great pleasure to receive & examine the statement & documents, provided they should be presented a sufficient time before the meeting of Congress to enable me to enter upon the investigation in time for the message. After some hesitation, he agreed to submit them the latter end of next week: so that if you think proper you may be here at the commencement of the week following." In very good to fine condition, with scattered small stains, and old clear tape along the top edge.
