James Buchanan Autograph Letter Signed "James Buchanan." One page with integral address leaf, 7.75" x 9.75", Lancaster, Pennsylvania, August 17, 1836. This letter was written to a General W. Patton, and reads in part, "…Whilst at Bedford I had an opportunity of seeing many of our friends from the West. The party in this quarter are united and harmonious. They are ardent & energetic in their movements. From present appearances I shall be disappointed if M. Van Buren should not receive the vote of the state by a majority of more than fifteen thousand…" Buchanan wrote this letter before he himself would run for the office of President, and he indeed did get his wish when Martin Van Buren was elected as the eighth president in 1837. A letter with this kind of political endorsement is a good find for collectors.

The letter is in very fine condition; usual folds are present; wax seal still intact on verso; Buchanan signs the address leaf as a free franked envelope.
