<B>James Buchanan (1791-1868) President, Autograph Letter Signed</B></I> "<I>James Buchanan</B></I>" as Congressman, one page with integral address leaf, 8" x 10", Lancaster, June 2, 1830 to a Baltimore merchant informing him that "<I>The Supreme Court, on yesterday afternoon, decided that they would not grant a re-adjustment of your case. Their decision affirming the judgment of the District Court of York County against you is in my opinion a violation of the clearest law & the plainest justice.</B></I>" Buchanan represented his Pennsylvania district in the House of Representatives from 1821 to 1831. The following year he would take the post of U.S. Minister to Russia. He resigned that post in 1834 to take up a vacant seat in the U.S. Senate where he served until 1845 when he became James K. Polk's Secretary of State. Losses form seal tear, small folds split affecting two words of text, otherwise Very Good on bright, clean paper. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection.
