ALS, two pages on two adjoining sheets, 7.75 x 10, May 10, 1850. Handwritten letter sending thanks for "Editorials on the slavery excitement," and discussing the circumstances around the forthcoming Compromise of 1850, which defused a political confrontation between slave and free states on the status of territories acquired in the Mexican-American War. In part: "Southern members tell me, Texas will be here with a new state next session! Meanwhile Texas is stealing, and is to steal all she can of New Mexico—and Crawford lets our troops at El Paso look on & help! By next winter, Texas will be up nearly to Santa Fe—and Texas will be here with a new state—when the South will be ready to admit California!" In very good to fine condition, with a rusty circular paperclip impression to the top, a few small stains, and a couple edge tears.
