Uncommon 2.5 x 4 carte-de-visite photo of General and Mrs. James B. Ricketts by Brady's National Photographic Portrait Galleries, signed on the reverse in ink by both subjects, "James B. Ricketts, Brig'r Gen'l" and "Fanny Ricketts." In fine condition.

This famed Union couple embodied the suffering of the Civil War and the noble sacrifices which resulted. A Union Army general, James B. Ricketts (1817-1887) was shot four times and captured at the First Battle of Bull Run. Learning that he was still alive on the battlefield, his wife Fanny passed through enemy territory and spent four days searching for him before finding him at a makeshift hospital. She tended to him as a nurse, accompanying him as a prisoner of war to Richmond and entering captivity to continue his care. Ricketts would be exchanged in December 1861, having made a partial recovery.
