American businessman (1856–1925) who made a fortune in the tobacco business and endowed what was to become Duke University. TLS signed “J. B. Duke,” one page, 8.5 x 10.75, British-American Tobacco Company letterhead, October 5, 1910. Letter to the Gaffney Mfg. Co., in part: "This will serve to introduce you to Mr. Trevor Thomas, a manager of Mustard & Co., or Shanghai…and Mr. C. Capron, manager of the Supply Department, British American Tobacco…Mustard & Co. is a very old established merchant house in China, doing a large business and closely allied and connected with British-American Tobacco Co. Ltd., which company has its depots all over the length and breadth of China and is doing a considerable business there. These gentlemen are interested in piece-goods business in China and if you are at all interested in that market so far as your products are concerned, I think that you might find it mutually advantageous to discuss matters." In fine condition, with a faint block of toning over much of the body of the letter.
