Scottish explorer of eastern equatorial Africa (1827–1892). Third-person ALS signed “Colonel J. A. Grant,” one page, 6 x 7.75, embossed Athenaeum Club letterhead, April 1, 1874. Handwritten third-person letter, briefly commenting on the explorer and botanist Friedrich Welwitsch, in part: "Colonel J. A. Grant begs to forward a few remarks which might be inserted under 'Home Correspondence'…Welwitsch was a Portuguese missionary was he not? As well as one of the most distinguished Botanists of his day." In fine condition, with slight soiling.
