Signed book: Archdeacon Paley’s View of the Evidences of Christianity. First edition, first printing. Philadelphia: Troutman and Hayes, 1852. Hardcover, 4.25 x 6, 264 pages. Signed in pencil on the first free end page. Garfield’s 2.5 x 1.5 personal bookplate “Inter Folia Fructus Library of James A. Garfield” is affixed inside the front cover. In very good condition, with toning and foxing to signed page as well as inside pages and both pastedowns, worn leather covers, edges, and spine, with boards and spine having been professionally restored to very good condition. Book is housed in a custom red-cloth covered clamshell case with “Paley’s / View of / Christianity” stamped in gilt on a black leather label at the top of the spine and, on lower portion, also in gilt, “James Garfield’s / Signed Copy / 1852.” Both James Garfield and his wife Lucretia were voracious readers and amassed a large collection of books. Some twenty years ago, several dozen of his books were de-accessioned from his personal library.
