Large and visually impressive ink signature, signed and dated as president, “James A. Garfield, April 25, 1881,” on an off-white 6 x 4 slip. Archivally double matted and framed with a small portrait and a name plaque to an overall size of 19 x 13. In fine condition, with a bit of scattered light toning and soiling. In his 1995 reference History Comes to Life, Kenneth Rendell notes that Garfield “is second only to William Henry Harrison in rarity of signed material during his presidency.” Garfield was quite evidently feeling the elation of his recent election, as this signature is much larger than most…almost 5.5” in length!
