Garfield’s personal bound guide booklets from his trip to Europe during the summer and fall of 1867. All of the guide books have been bound together in a hardcover edition, 4.75 x 7.5, with Garfield’s personal bookplate affixed on the inside front cover. The seven guide booklets are: “The Stranger’s Guide to Hampton Court Palace and Gardens” (London, 1867), 90 pages; “Mackay’s Guide to Chester and Its Environs,” 160 pages; “Black’s Guide to the Trossachs” (Edinburgh, 1864), 78 pages including 7.5” x 9.25” fold-out map of “Loch Lomond and the Trossachs.” Inserted, following the title page, is a 5.25” x 3.5” pre-printed cardreading: “Gratis Master of the Horse’s Office, Royal Mews Pimlico Admit and Party of Five to view The Queen’s Stables / G.A. Maude, / Crown Equerry,” and signed in the middle “Gen. J.A. Garfield”; “Black’s Guide Book Advertiser. 1865,” 52 pages; “Hand-Book of Florence and Environs” (Florence. 1866), includes 10” x 8” fold-out map of “Piazza della Signoria – Firenze,” with a total of five penciled words by Garfield on pages 72, 103, 110, and 111; “Rubens at the Ufizj Gallery and the Pitti Palace Gallery,” 158 pages; “Guide to the Tower of London” (London, 1867); “Westminster Abbey, A Hand-Book Guide for Visitors” (London, 1867), with fold-out map of London, on the reverse of the map, near the binding, Garfield has penciled 12 words, possibly in Latin. The signed card rates fine condition, with just a bit of scattered light soiling. The remainder of the booklet rates good to very good, with separated front cover held in place with cloth tape, toning to inside pages, some small separations to fold-out maps and circulars, separated back hinge, tape repair to front hinge, heavy flaking and surface loss to spine, and scattered light surface wear to covers. The book is housed in a custom clamshell box and slipcase.
