Signed book: The Poetry of Germany. Later printing. Philadelphia: John Weik, 1856. Hardcover, 5.5 x 7.5, 332 pages. Signed in pencil on the first free end page, “J. A. Garfield, Hiram O., 1856.” Inside front cover bears one of Garfield’s personal library bookplates, labeled at the bottom in black ink in an unknown hand, “Case 24, Shelf U.” Book is housed in a custom clamshell box and slip case. In very good condition, with scattered toning and foxing to signed page, lightly affecting signature, pencil marks to some inside pages, scattered foxing and wrinkling on inside covers, sunning to spine, scattered wear to covers, as well as some scattered light edge loss. Both James Garfield and his wife Lucretia were voracious readers and amassed a large collection of books. Some twenty years ago, several dozen of his books were de-accessioned.
