Auction Date:2010 Jan 13 @ 10:00 (UTC-05:00 : EST/CDT)
Location:5 Rt 101A Suite 5, Amherst, New Hampshire, 03031, United States
Signed book: The Stars and The Earth. Second American Edition. Boston: Wm. Crosby and H. P. Nichols, 1850. Softcover, 4 x 6.25, 88 pages. Signed in pencil on the first free end page, “J. A. Garfield, Syracuse, N. Y., Sept 15th, 185[?].” Garfield’s personal bookplate, which has been slightly cut off on the right side, is affixed to inside front cover. In very good condition, with scattered light toning and foxing to signed page, signature just a shade light, wear, sunning, and fraying to covers, and sunning and old repair to spine.

Over the past thirty years, only five Garfield signed books have ever been offered at major auctions. The book Collecting Books and Pamphlets of Presidents of the United States states that "books from Garfield's library are considered scarce," and what makes this particular example more fascinating is that it undoubtedly dates from Garfield's short-lived career as a schoolteacher (1856-1857). His library consisted of about 2,500 volumes, of which several dozen were deaccessioned. This particular volume was acquired directly from his home, “Lawnfield," in Mentor, Ohio.
