LS as president-elect, signed “J. A. Garfield,” one page, 5 x 8, Mentor, Ohio letterhead, December 7, 1880. Letter to Marvin Smith of Jamestown, New York, in full: "Your letter of the 18th November came duly to hand. Accept my thanks for your congratulations." Includes a 4.25 x 6.5 cabinet portrait of Garfield, published by F. Trifet of Boston. In fine condition. Taking place on November 2, 1880, the presidential election saw Garfield win a decisive victory over Winfield Scott Hancock in the electoral vote despite a miniscule lead in the popular vote. Garfield’s win marked the sixth consecutive victory in the presidential election for the Republican Party, its longest winning streak in history. A handsome letter signed a month after the historic contest.
