Choice ALS signed “J. A. Garfield,” one page, lightly-lined, 5.75 x 8, April 21, 1869. Brief letter to George W. Morse. In full: “In answer to your note of the 20th inst. I have the honor to subscribe myself.” In fine condition. At this time Garfield was serving in the House of Representatives, where just a year earlier he had presented a popular argument on currency and the taxing of US bonds. In the next Congress, he was named chairman of the committee on banking and currency, drafting several important bills.
