Signed book: Volume 2 of Sessional Papers, Third Session of the Fourth Parliament of the Dominion of Canada. Session 1880-81. First edition. Ottowa: MacLean, Roger and Co., 1881. Rebound hardcover, 6.5 x 9.75, 907 pages. Signed on the inside front cover in black ink, as president, “J. A. Garfield.” Garfield’s 2.5 x 1.5 personal bookplate “Inter Folia Fructus Library of James A. Garfield” is affixed below his signature. In very good condition, with scattered toning and foxing to inside front cover, as well as opening and closing pages and fore-edges, partial mirroring of signature to first free end page, and professional restoration to covers, spine and binding. Housed in a custom-made brown cloth covered four-flap box housed in a matching custom-made leather covered slipcase with book-like spine, five raised bands, and gilt-lettered spine.

Books were a scarce commodity to young Garfield, who as an adult became a voracious reader and amassed a large library. This particular volume includes a transcript of the transmission letter of the voluminous report consisting of ‘Tables of Trade and Navigation of the Dominion of Canada’ from Minister of Customs Mackenzie Bowell to the Governor General of Canada dated January 17, 1881, less than seven weeks before Garfield’s inauguration—evidence that its publication and delivery to Garfield took place after his arrival at the White House. Four years after his assassination, Lucretia Garfield completed the first presidential memorial library at Lawnfield, the family’s Ohio estate. Some two decades ago, several books were de-accessioned from the collection. However, no signed Garfield book as president has ever been offered for sale at a public auction and we have no knowledge that, except for the one offered here, another exists. An exceedingly rare item signed by Garfield as president!
