James A. Garfield Letter Signed
James A. Garfield Letter Signed "JA Garfield". Two pages, 4.75" x 7.8", House of Representatives letterhead, Washington D.C., nd. This is page three and four of a four page letter, pages one and two are not present. It reads in part (accomplished in another hand) "…The Democratic member of the Committee have not acceded to this suggestion and thus far have refused to do so, unless we will consent to a general bill to reduce all duties imposed on imported goods. The duty on paper and paper pulp, is now 20 percent…". Garfield served as a U.S. Congressman for the state of Ohio from 1863-1881, so this letter was likely written during this lengthy term of service. Without the rest of the letter, we cannot be certain what bill and legislation is being discussed. Garfield had a long career as a Congressman before he became President, only to serve six months and fifteen days in office. He was assassinated by Charles Guiteau, a disgruntled government employee. The letter is in fine condition; one small piece missing from the upper left corner; light overall soiling; usual folds are present.
