LS signed "J. A. Garfield," one page both sides, 5 x 8, House of Representatives letterhead, January 2, 1877. Letter to General J. M. Conly regarding the disputed Hayes-Tilden election. In part: "When I was in Columbus…I saw an article in your paper by Judge Swayne on the constitutional provisions in reference to counting the Electoral vote. I was struck with it as an able statement of the case…I hope our editors will scorch Banning for his talk of violence in the House, as he is the first member to speak of such a thing in either house." In fine condition. A remarkable letter, as it anticipates 2021's storming of the Capitol during the counting of electoral votes—a day that did, tragically, result in violence.
