James A Garfield- 2 Covers Signed as Congressman James A Garfield Two Covers Signed as Congressman,
James A Garfield Two Covers Signed as Congressman, each franked "J. A. Garfield MC" in the upper right corner and written to B(urke) A. Hinsdale, President of Hiram College in Portage County, Ohio. Notated on the back are the dates the envelopes were received - 1866 and 1873. James A. Garfield was in the Ohio Volunteer Infantry when he was elected to Congress for the first time in 1862. He chose to stay in the Army and was commissioned a major general on September 19, 1863 following his gallantry at Chickamauga. He resigned his commission a few weeks later, finally taking his seat in Congress, a position he would hold for nine terms until his election as president in 1880. Hinsdale was a longtime friend and correspondent of Garfield's, and was the author of an often-referenced two-volume book, Works. Much of their correspondence was published in the Garfield-Hinsdale Letters, edited by Mary L. Hinsdale in 1949. Condition of both covers is fine, the 1873 cover is ragged at the right edge, not affecting the signature, each 5.75" x 3.25" in size, original letters not present.
