Following the 2013 BCS National Championship Game against Notre Dame, McCarron became the first quarterback to win back-to-back consensus national championships in the BCS era. In addition, since his freshman/redshirt year, McCarron has been associated with three national title teams under coach Nick Saban: 2009, 2011, and 2012. In January 2014 Jake Coker transferred to the University of Alabama. He was eligible to play immediately and did not have to sit out a year after graduating from Florida State in April. In his first year at Alabama he competed for the Crimson Tide's starting job. Blake Sims won the competition with Coker as the backup. Coker again competed for the starting job in 2015, and this time won the competition. Coker led the Crimson Tide to win the 2016 College Football Playoffs National Championship against the Clemson Tigers, with a final score of 45–40.
