From a Yangtze River region burial, this Mythical Beast is rearing up or standing tall in readiness and protection. This figure, known in a vareity of forms, is the Han-period ancestor of the Winged Chimera. The example here does have small wings on his side and a split horn, and the open mouth and laid-back ears suggest the attack mode the head gets on an angry Dog. Standing 3-1/4" tall he is 4-7/8" from nose to tail and displays characteristic water-erosion on the surface from the chemicals in the water table of the Yangtze basin (Have seen similar in museums and books). Provenance: Mei Li Dong, N.Y.Dealer, about 1995. She guaranteed the source of it. Neat and unique vision of the protective Chimera, and a good "feel" of the Han period.
