** Article for reference - "Cong are among the most impressive yet most enigmatic of all ancient Chinese jades. The function and meaning of these tubes with a square cross-section and a circular hole are completely unknown. Although cong were made at many stages of the neolithic and early historic period, their origins in the neolithic cultures of south-east China have only been recognised in the last fifteen to twenty years.** The cong is one of the principle jade types of the Liangzhu neolithic culture (c.2500BC)around Lake Tai in Jangsu province, an area that was home to one of the two major jade-using people of early China.--from the book "CHINESE JADE FROM THE NEOLITHIC TO THE QING".
