<B>Jacques-Louis David Autograph Letter Signed</B></I> "<I>David</B></I>" (with paraph). One page with integral address leaf, in French, 4.5" x 7.75", no place, September 2, 1813, to Mr. Bernier, Architect of the Louvre, Paris. David writes, in part: "<I>David bids good day to Mr. Bernier. He lets him know that he forgot to tell him about a painting of Mr. Apparicio Spaniard which is place opposite the painting of the Sabines and which depicts Thalie and young Jonah. It belongs to him...</B></I>" David was a French painter and is regarded as the founder of the French Neoclassical school of painting. He was an active supporter of the Revolution and a friend of Robespierre, but was imprisoned after his fall from power. Upon release, he became court painter for Napoleon, but was exiled in 1815 and lived out his days in Brussels. The work mentioned in this letter, <I>The Intervention of the Sabine Women</B></I> is a landmark painting, completed in 1799, and is currently hanging (still) in the Louvre. The letter is in very fine condition.
