From 1658 until his demise he worked as a portrait- and genre painter in Leiden. A talented painter, his charming and casual portraits were much sought-after. The present painting is typical of his middle years and done in the charming manner popular in 17th cent. Holland, where children were often depicted in Arcadian dress. The present painting is influenced by the paintings of the Cuyp family..
