Union Army general during the American Civil War, and later a Republican politician from Ohio. He served as the 28th Governor of Ohio and as United States Secretary of the Interior. LS signed “J. D. Cox,” one page, lightly-lined, 7.75 x 10, Department of the Interior letterhead, May 26, 1870. Letter to Senator H. B. Anthony, Chairman of the House Committee on Printing. In part: “In the latest annual report of this Department, I referred to a very large accumulation of broken sets of Congressional documents and odd volumes which have been placed in the custody of the Department of the Interior…In view of the difficulty of providing proper storage room…many of which are of little value, I have the honor to inclose, herewith, a draft of a Joint Resolution.” In fine condition, with a uniform shade of mild toning, and some scattered light soiling.
