Jackson,CA - Amador County - c1856 - Mill at Jackson Photograph :
A view of the mill with 11 workers stopping to pose for the photograph. The image measures 8 x 5", mounted on 10 1/2 x 7 3/4" green cardstock. The contrast is high and the focus is sharp. The edges have a "silver" finish, particularly in the lower left corner. The upper and right edges appear to show part of the negative that surround the actual image. Some foxing and small areas of discoloration noted, otherwise very fine. No photographer listed. "The mill at Jackson (Gary, 2nd from left)" hand written in pencil on reverse. The image includes 11 workers and what appears to be a 20 stamp mill. Based on the state of the mill, it may be nearing completion. A 20 stamp mill such as this could handle up to 50-100 tons of ore per day. The town of Jackson is located between Sutter Creek and the Mokelumne River, and was an important settlement early in the Gold Rush. A favorite stopping place because of a good spring, the camp was named after Colonel Alden Jackson around 1849. A post office was established in July, 1851. Jackson was the Calaveras County seat until 1852, and is still the Amador County seat from its beginnings on May 11, 1854. The Kennedy and Argonaut were two of the most important mines in the area. While the photograph appears to be in CA based on the topography, the actual location is difficult to verify based on the photograph (Ref: CA Gold Camps, Gudde; CA Gold Country, Koeppel).
