"Deposited with Selby Smelting and Lead Co. For Refining." Dateline San Francisco, December 12, 1894. Bar No. 128, weight 168.10 oz. before melting, 162.53 oz. after melting. Net Value $2,412.64. Approximately 5 x 12". From Hardenburg Mine, 3.5 miles south of Jackson. Comprised of Hardenburg and Littlefield claims, 2300 ft. on the lode. Mine had 20 stamp mill (Ref: Mines and mineral resources of Amador County, Calaveras County, William Burling Tucker, 1915). The Selby Smelting and Refining Company was started by Thomas Selby, an Englishman who opened the first smelting operation for metals other than gold and silver on the west coast and quickly became the largest metal smelter in America. In the last quarter of the 19th Century, Selby outgrew its San Francisco facility and moved across the bay to a site near the Hercules Dynamite Plant. In 1905, at the height of its success, the American Smelting and Refining Co. (ASARCO) purchased Selby. Since the company was so successful, ASARCO left the Selby name intact on all of their operations (Ref: Holabird, 2008). Fold lines, otherwise very fine.
