"WINNERS WILL BE NOTIFIED AFTER THE AUCTION ENDS BY THE AUCTIONEER ONCE ALL BIDS HAVE BEEN PROCESSED TO DETERMINE THE WINNER FOR EACH LOT."
Jackie Robinson's official NAACP 1947 annual merit award, personally owned by him. Robinson became the first African-American major league player when he joined the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947, breaking boundaries in the baseball world. The star player earned a ''Rookie of the Year'' National League 1947 award, as is mentioned on this certificate. Certificate begins by commemorating Robinson's All-American athletic achievements while at UCLA as a ''...star of the gridiron, diamond, track and court, first four letter man at your Alma Mater...you became the first man in the history of your country to grip the handle of a baseball bat and knock prejudice clear out of a Big League Ball park!'' It goes on to laud the breakout player on behalf of the organization: ''...your fellow members of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People...take pride in your 'come through' performance with so much at stake for American unity, democracy, and fair play...'' Certificate measures 8.5'' x 11'' and is signed by NAACP Chairman and President. Near fine condition. With an LOA from Robinson's wife.
